    This book is divided into three parts: Einstein's theory, test theories, and experimental tests of special relativity. The first part involves an introduction to inertial reference frames (in particular, the definitions of simultaneity, which show that a specific value of velocity has no absolute meaning), Einstein's two basic hypotheses, Lorentz transformation and its kinematic effects (e.g. simultaneity and causality, addition of velocities, length contraction, time dilation and clock paradox, Doppler effect, and Thomas precession), relativistic mechanics, electrodynamics in media, and Proca's vector field. In the second part, we introduce the test theories of special relativity, provide a new method to get the generalized Lorentz transformations, and then give discussions of how to compare them with experiments. In particular, the discussions indicate that the one-way speed of light is not observable in the present laboratories. In the third part, variant types of experiments performed up to now are analyzed and compared to the predictions of special relativity. The analyses show that the experiments are a test of the two-way velocity, but not of the one-way velocity, of light.

    This colleclion of papers provides a broad view of the development of Lorentz and Poincare: invariance and spacetime symmetry throughout the past 100 years. The issues explored in these papers include: (1) formulations of relatity theories in which the speed of light is not a universal constant but whichl are consistent with the four-dimensional symmetry of the Lorentz and Poincare groups and with experimental results, (2) analyses and discussions by Reichenbach concerning the concepts of simultaneity and physical time from a philosophical point of view, and (3) results achiieved by the union of the relativity and quantum theories, marking the beginnings of quantum electrodynamics and relativistic quantum mechanics, (4) Ten of the fundamental experiments testing special relativity are also discussed.
